Description
This curriculum is a 12-lesson unit study introducing the beautiful world of Maps. The unit is intended for the grade span of 2nd through 4th, but could be adapted for a younger and older children. It can take from 3 to 4 weeks to cover the material. It covers directions, keys/legends, time zones, distortions, an introduction to latitude and longitude, contours, topography, several historic maps from Ancient to Modern History, and biomes. There is a fun and engaging project for each of the lesson ranging from simple to complex . The end results of the projects are both beautiful and educational. Narration prompts are found throughout the unit for both short verbal narrations and for longer transcribed or written narrations. A small section explaining narrations and how to do them is also included in the introduction to the unit, as well as a section on Main Lesson Books/Note booking and notice and wonder. Several books are required for the unit. I’ve chosen high quality books with fascinating information for this unit. Three are used throughout the Unit and three others are used for a portion of the unit.
Mapping a Changing World by Yvette La Pierre*
A Child’s Introduction to the World by Heather Alexander*
The Geography Book by Caroline Arnold*
The Librarian Who Measured the Earth by Katheryn Lasky
Mountains of the World by Dieter Braun
The Wonderous Workings of Planet Earth by Rachel Ignotofsky
*These books are used throughout the unit and will need to be purchased.
